handwritten bills
In spite of all its general excellence, one thing that does concern us with the restaurant scene in Japan is a persistent hangover from the culture of excess of the 90s, which means that the city is overrun with over-gilded precious follies, products of misspent inherited wealth and the ill gotten loot from Marunouchi: if you're prepared to empty your wallet you can get anything you want. And when the bill comes in these establishments it is generally a handwritten number on a tiny slip of paper almost inevitably 4-5 times what you were expecting.
